Frequently asked questions

What is a /24 subnet and how many hosts does it support?

A /24 subnet (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) provides 256 total IP addresses. Two are reserved, the network address (e.g. 192.168.1.0) and the broadcast address (e.g. 192.168.1.255), leaving 254 usable host addresses. /24 subnets are the most common choice for small office LANs. For larger offices, consider /23 (510 usable hosts) or segment with VLANs.

How do I choose the right subnet size for my office network?

Start by counting the maximum number of devices that will be on the network: including workstations, phones, printers, IoT devices, and servers, and add 25–50% growth headroom. Choose the smallest CIDR block that comfortably fits that count. For most offices under 200 devices, a /24 (254 hosts) is standard. Separate voice, data, IoT, and management traffic into VLANs with their own subnets for security and performance, even if each subnet is small.
